Scottish Sea Farms has received planning permission to build its new state of the art Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) young salmon (smolt) hatchery at Barcaldine Argyll, by the Argyll and Bute council this month (March 2017). 
 
Leading salmon producer Scottish Sea Farms is investing £35 million in this major new facility as part of a total £70 million spend anticipated over the next few years. The new hatchery will create up to 25 permanent high-value skilled jobs.
 
The new land-based RAS freshwater facility will be used for rearing smolts in bio-secure and environmentally friendly conditions.
 
Planning consent follows a period of consultation with the local community and the company has adapted plans to ensure that the site is developed in a way that also benefits the community and supports sustainable growth in the area.
